iPhone 3.0 Tethering: How-to & Speed Test Results

June 29th, 2009

I recently unlocked the tethering feature on my new iPhone 3GS by following this guide. It was simple, painless, and did not require any jail-breaking. I was also pretty impressed with the speed test results (included below).

Keep in mind, no one knows how AT&T will respond to you unlocking this feature right now. If you choose to be bold and daring like myself, you may end up with a nasty bill from our favorite cell phone provider. I’ll keep you updated on that front and let you know if anything happens.

    Here are some helpful tips:

    * Install the latest iTunes software first.
    * Turn on tethering before connecting the iPhone to the machine.

Before I did this, my netbook only recognized my iPhone as a camera. After I did this, it recognized it as a network (265kbps down, 262kbps up).
